German Christmas Pyramids - The Original Christmas Tree

Traditional German Christmas pyramids originated in the Ore Mountains, otherwise known as Erzgebirge -  a low mountain range in the east of Germany more than 200 years ago to represent a symbol of light reflecting the wish of miners for a safe return home from the darkness and danger of the mines. Over time, as mining gradually declined, some miners instead began woodcarving as a hobby, crafting items including German Christmas pyramids. These wonderful creations became a genuine folk tradition and a precursor to the more commonly known Christmas tree.

German Christmas pyramids were originally designed with stands made from four wooden rods with three shelves to hold Christmas figurines. Eventually, shelves were attached to a central rod topped by a pinwheel. When burning candles were placed at the base of the pyramid, the rising air turned the pinwheel's blades and the shelves would rotate.

The pyramid has changed tremendously from the original simple rod construction first produced in the Erzgebirge. Light still remains the same as the pyramid's most important and beautiful feature. Light sets the pyramid in motion, and for more than 200 years it has been, and still remains to this day, as the symbol of life.
