Galileo Thermometers - How Do They Work?

A Galileo Thermometer works on a simple principal first considered by Galileo Galilei in the 1600’s:

β€œThe density of a liquid changes in proportion to its temperature”

Galileo Thermometers feature a sealed glass cylinder containing a clear liquid along with a number of glass discs of varying density which are filled with a coloured liquid. The discs are calibrated by adding a certain amount of fluid so they all have the same density, though their weight varies slightly. Attached to each disc is a metal tag that displays a numeric temperature reading.

As the temperature outside the thermometer changes, the temperature of the liquid in the thermometer also changes, causing the liquid to change its density by expanding or contracting. At any given temperature, some of the discs will float and others will sink due to the density. The lowest floating neutrally buoyant disc will read the correct temperature, whilst the others will have either sunk to the bottom or have risen to the top.

NB: Galileo didn’t actually invent the Galileo thermometer itself. This rendition that you can purchase from the Clock Shop was originally designed by the Natural History Museum, London, in 1990, using the theories and methods Galileo and his colleagues invented in the 17th century.
