An Elegant Blend of Timekeeping and Science
High class and elegance are two terms that come to mind with this Astrolabium mantel clock, designed by world renowned clock makers HERMLE from the Black Forest in Germany, where the company was established in 1922.
Measuring 28.5cm in height, this exquisite mantel clock represents an elegant blend of timekeeping and science. The name Astrolabium is a medieval latin word which translates to βstar-takerβ, and rightly so, as these clocks feature intricate designs that showcase the choreography of the Earth, Sun and Moon's rotation in the Solar System in real time as outlined below. In medieval times, an astrolabe was an instrument used to determine the altitude of the Sun or other celestial bodies.
This mantel clock features a solid wood base with a black finish, a polished nickel plate and a crystal glass dome that has been mouth blown. The exquisite chapter ring dial features roman numerals and a laser cut centre pattern that draws the eye. The highly accurate astrolabium features separate Sun, Moon and Earth spheres on a highly intricate visible gear train that reproduces the celestial movements.
Whilst the Earth rotates on its own axis once every 24 hours, it also makes a complete orbit around the Sun once every 365 days, represented as a calendar year. At the base of the mechanism is a highly accurate disc that features the months of the year, as well as the 12 constellations of the zodiac- the Earth will pass around this whole disc over the course of a year, whilst also spinning on its own axis once every 24 hours, represented as a full day. The Moon's 29.5 day lunar orbit around the Earth is represented, taking the same time to spin around on its axis once. These movements represented in real time serve a timely reminder that the movement of the Earth, Sun and Moon are written into the fabric of our everyday lives.
This clock is fitted with a highly accurate quartz skeleton movement that is accurate at keeping time.
The overall design of this timepiece represents a perfect blend of high technology with elegance. Its timeless modern design showcases upscale ambience, replicating the quintessential mechanical work of 18th century clock-making, with a modern blend. It is of heirloom quality, represented as an item that will last for many years to come.
