Paying Homage To Artisans From A Time Long Ago
This truly unique Cuckoo Clock represents a genuine, high quality hand-crafted Black Forest table clock designed by world renowed clock makers ROMBA from the Black Forest in Germany where the company was established in 1894.
Measuring 35cm in height, this clock features a standing whistling clock peddler holding a smaller shield clock. The story of the clock peddler dates back hundreds of years where the artisans would spend long winters crafting cuckoo clocks, then travel far and wide in the spring to sell their unique creations on a large backpack. Today the clock peddler is celebrated as a prominent symbol of the successes that the cuckoo clock industry has seen throughout the years, and are often symbolised in many cuckoo clock designs, paying homage to artisans from a time long since past.
The clock peddler whistles when activated by a lever at the back, who whistles his tune and turns his head side to side whilst doing so. The whistling sound is produced by tiny bellows that push air through a whistle, to produce the whistling tune.
The clock peddler is carrying a shield clock on display, a very famous and traditional clock that has been around since the 18th century. The design is comprised of a square case with an arch on the top of it, with handpainted features- usually floral decals that have been handpainted by a specialised artist as the task is quite elaborate. Today, only a few experienced clock makers in the Black Forest still produce and paint these vintage designs, with Conny Haas from ROMBA still handpainting these timepieces herself. The shield clock was the most popular style of clock in the Black Forest until the carved cuckoo clock became popular in the mid 19th century.
