African lions are the most social of all cats and live together in groups or in a pride of about 15 lions. They live in grasslands, scrub and woodlands of sub-Saharan Africa, and can sleep up to 20 hours a day. They are big eaters, and can eat up to 40 kilograms of meat in a single serving. They are considered the second largest cat in the world. Interestingly, it is almost exclusively the females which do the hunting, though the males are always the first ones to eat. The roar of a lioness can be heard up to 8 kilometres away.
