Immaculate attention to detail is easily apparent with this exquisite 8 Day Mechanical Carved Cuckoo Clock by German designer Robert Herr. This cuckoo clock represents a fine example of a genuine, high quality hand-crafted Black Forest cuckoo clock, produced from Schonach, in the heart of the Black Forest in Germany.

Measuring 62cm* in height, this impressive clock features an arrangement of birds, with two birds featured on either side of the clock dial; a birds nest underneath the dial, and two love birds crowning this beautiful clock. There are also a number of ornamental leaves adorning the body of the clock, helping to form the intricate overall design of the clock. What sets Robert Herr cuckoo clocks apart is their very deep and detailed carvings. Leaf and bird features were commonly represented on many of the early cuckoo clock designs, and today still makes up one of the most popular styles of cuckoo clock carving. The ornamental leaves around the front of the clock are characteristic of the traditionally carved cuckoo clocks.

Additional details to complete the overall design feature include the clock dial, numerals and hands which are also made from wood, whilst the chains and other visible metal parts are darkly burnished. The clock has been treated with a dark brown antique wax, and is rounded out with colourful dancers situated on a balcony above the clock dial. 

What sets this clock apart is that the entire piece has been carved and hand signed by one person, who has seen the project through from start to completion. The in-built wooden cuckoo of this clock has a very beautiful cuckoo call which calls the time each hour and once every half hour, moving its wings when called. After the cuckoo has called, one of two melodies will sound on the hour. The musical movement housed inside the cuckoo clock features a 36 note music box instead of an 18 or 24 note music box, thus producing more musical detail equalling a higher quality song. 

The dancers on the balcony who are dressed in traditional clothing will spin elegantly to the music. The tunes that come with this clock include Tune Badner Lied, and Tief im Odenwald. This clock model has a manual night shut-down mode that is enabled by lifting and pulling a lever, and it needs to be wound once a week.

Black Forest mechanical cuckoo clocks are weight driven and are available in two different movements:

• 1 Day Movement - you wind the clock by pulling the chain and winding the weights once a day
• 8 Day Movement - you wind the clock by pulling the chain and winding the weights once a week

Each mechanical cuckoo clock will have either two or three weights; two weights for cuckoo only and three weights for cuckoo and music. One weight runs the clock movement and hands that show the time and the second weight drives the cuckoo calling mechanism. The cuckoo sound is produced using bellows that push air through two whistles creating the 'cook' and 'coo' sounds respectively. If you choose to also have music with your mechanical cuckoo clock, the third weight drives a traditional mechanical music box movement with a pinned cylinder that plucks notes on a 'comb' to produce a melody.
