Immaculate attention to detail is easily apparent with this exquisite 8 Day Mechanical Carved Cuckoo Clock by German designer Robert Herr. This cuckoo clock represents a fine example of a genuine, high quality hand-crafted Black Forest cuckoo clock, produced from Schonach, in the heart of the Black Forest in Germany.

Measuring 101cm in height, this impressive clock features the design of a railroad house, or, Bahnhäusleuhr in German, which resembles an important milestone in the history of Black Forest Clock Making. The design came to be in the mid 18th century, by Friedrich Eisenlohr, an architect for a railroad company, who was inspired by the houses of railroad gatekeepers. This vintage reproduction is a bold design, and features deep and detailed carvings - features which set Robert Herr cuckoo clocks apart. The clock has been treated with a mahogany coloured finish, and the weights are encased in beautiful hand turned wooden housings.

What sets this clock apart is that the entire piece has been carved and hand signed by one person, who has seen the project through from start to completion. The combination of the design, creativity and attention to detail that Robert Herr cuckoo clocks encompasses truly represents what the essence of Black Forest high class workmanship is all about.

The in-built wooden cuckoo of this clock has a very beautiful cuckoo call which calls the time each hour and once every half hour, moving its wings when called. This clock model has a manual night shut-down mode that is enabled by lifting and pulling a lever, and it needs to be wound once a week. It features two melodies including 'High Badnerland' and 'Deep in the Hotzenwald'.

Black Forest mechanical cuckoo clocks are weight driven and are available in two different movements:

• 1 Day Movement - you wind the clock by pulling the chain and winding the weights once a day
• 8 Day Movement - you wind the clock by pulling the chain and winding the weights once a week

Each mechanical cuckoo clock will have either two or three weights; two weights for cuckoo only and three weights for cuckoo and music. One weight runs the clock movement and hands that show the time and the second weight drives the cuckoo calling mechanism. The cuckoo sound is produced using bellows that push air through two whistles creating the 'cook' and 'coo' sounds respectively. If you choose to also have music with your mechanical cuckoo clock, the third weight drives a traditional mechanical music box movement with a pinned cylinder that plucks notes on a 'comb' to produce a melody.
